This story reports on modern slavery in Ecuador, Lebanon, Thailand and the Netherlands.

Given an audio testimony and some location footage as reference, I developed the storyboard and decided what to reconstruct frame by frame. Because hand-drawn animation is time-intensive, I worked with reporters to shorten the testimonies to what was feasible without losing the story. The editor opted for illustrations over staged video reconstruction to signal clearly it was a retelling. I chose a frame-by-frame approach to combine my illustration style with animation. Working within Nieuwsuur's visual style, I sourced additional reference material to draw from.
